Sail Australia 

POWERBOAT AND SAILING SCHOOL

Sail Australia has been operating for 21 years and runs a comprehensive set of courses designed to take the novice sailor through a series of lessons, building up knowledge, experience and confidence.

We follow the Australian Yachting Federation’s Syllabus, so whether you want to cruise the world, race to Hobart or spend a twilight evening on Sydney Harbour, Sail Australia Sailing School will show you how.


All boats used are in full Waterways Authority survey and are easy to handle.

Practical courses are generally located at The Spit, Mosman.

Highly qualified, patient and friendly instructors will show you that sailing is a fun and exciting sport. They all meet the strict standards of Yachting Australia and NSW Maritime.

BASIC COURSES

INTRODUCTORY COURSE ON YACHTS - SYDNEY BASED
- for the beginner
Our Introduction to Sail program involves an exciting day out on Sydney Harbour learning the basics of sail handling and steering. No prior sailing experience is required.

A great fun day, this course gives you a taste of sailing and the opportunity to learn some basic principals.

The course covers:

  • Personal Safety
  • Ropework
  • Adjusting the sails
  • Wind and boat direction
  • The compass and the chart
  • Steering the yacht

Our students board our yacht at Milsons Point at 8.45 am, returning at 3.45pm.

Students bring their own lunch, sunscreen and a hat is recommended. We will provide bottled water and wet weather jackets.

On completion you will receive a Yachting Australia course completion certificate. Cost is $180 per person.

1 x 6 hour lesson - $240 

COMPETENT CREW COURSE - SYDNEY BASED
Build on your sailing skills and gain your certificate of competency so that you can enjoy cruising with others, or work towards sailing your own boat.

Our Introduction to Sail certificate is highly recommended but not compulsory for those with some previous sailing experience. This is a challenging course full of vital information for working as an integral part of a team onboard any yacht.

The course covers:

  • Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a yacht and rigging
  • Ropework
  • Man overboard recovery
  • Manners and customs
  • Meteorology
  • Basic engine checks
  • Sail handling and adjustment
  • Personal safety, fire prevention and fire fighting
  • Distress signals
  • Rules of the 'road'
  • Steering a compass course under sail and power
  • Anchoring

Our students board our yacht at Milsons Point at 8.45 am, returning at 3.45pm, for 2 of the 3 days, and students also have an opportunity to experience 3 hours of night sailing.

Commencing and finishing times for the third day are subject to the timing of sunset at that particular time of year. Courses are usually run over 2 weekends and are also available as 3 consecutive days including weekends and weekdays.

Students bring their own lunch, sunscreen and a hat is recommended. We will provide bottled water and wet weather jackets.

On completion you will receive a Yachting Australia course completion certificate. Cost is $660 per person.

INSHORE CERTIFICATE PRACTICAL COURSE
This course teaches you to take command of a vessel inshore. So if you would like to charter a boat in Sydney or any destination around the world, this course is a must. It teaches you boat handling , sailing skills, how to organise your boat and crew, coping with emergencies and much more.

4 x 3 hour practical lessons - $475 per person

 


POWERBOAT HANDLING

Gain your confidence in handling a small power boat. Learn how to launch and recover the boat, manoeuvre the boat at speed and in confined areas. Learn anchoring, man-overboard, safety, towing and emergency stops.  This follows the Powerboat scheme of Yachting Australia.

2 x 6 hour lessons - 8am to 2pm - based on 4 students.  Less time for less students.
$350 per person (discount for 4 persons)

Join in at whatever level you may be at. Practice makes perfect - so join in the sailing or just sit back and relax. One of our experienced skippers is on hand to show you around the harbour and if the weather suits, take time for a quick dip in one of the many bays in the harbour. Must book
